This location is still open! Someone wrongly reported that they had closed. If they don't answer the phone call again...they are understandably very busy. We live this place and their kind staff!

Honestly, I have no idea how we ended up here. I think my date just wanted to get out of the cold weather, so we found the most convenient dumpling place nearby for lunch. I went with the shrimp with lobster sauce lunch special for $6.75 which included hot and sour soup, fried rice and an egg roll. This really was one of the best deals in New York. Shrimp with lobster sauce is a Cantonese favorite of mine and it lived up to expectations. I was a little disappointed that the egg roll was so small and lacked much filling. I was hoping for a big honkin East coast egg roll. Of course we had to try some guo tie or fried dumplings. They were pretty fantastic! All in all, another delicious NYC meal!

You go to Chinatown for the sensory overload. Sights, sounds, smells and, if course, food. The Excellent Dumpling House is one of those legendary eateries with a loyal following. The appeal is the price, fast service and the quality of the food. I tried the chicken with broccoli lunch and found it a remarkable value. Very, very good hot and sour soup, well cooked white meat chicken and fresh, al dente, broccoli with a tiny - but meh- spring roll - it ran under $7. Amazing for NYC. But seated next to me at a communal table was a local eating chicken dumplings. I asked if they were good. He smiled and, with a mouth full of hot dumpling said, Mmmmmm! I ordered them too. They earned a wow! I recommend you try this well reviewed classic. The buzz at lunch was intoxicating. The basic Chinese fare is 4 star good. Add the dumplings and it notches up to 5 stars for me. My lunch was $15 with two entrees. You could make a meal if you ordered the dumplings alone. You would and out for $9 - including a fair tip. Go, you'll thank me later!

I love dumplings and when a restaurant is named Excellent Dumpling House of course I am going to have high expectations. The scallion pancakes are delicious! We got two orders since we just couldn't get enough of it. Be sure to try them. My friend ordered the beef soup noodles. The broth was very good and the beef was so soft and tasty. We also got the wonton with spicy sauce, again it was great. Last, we tried the seafood dumpling, no complaints here. The skin is not doughy at all, very soft and almost melts in your mouth when you take a bite. Will I come back here? For sure!

With "Dumpling House" in its name, I expected there to be a lot more dumplings on the menu. There aren't very many, but the few items that I had were pretty tasty. Excellent? Not really, but still good and very satisfying. Wonton in Hot Spicy Sauce: The sauce wasn't spicy, but I fixed that by adding my own. The wontons had a nice thin wonton skin, thoroughly flavored meat filling, and it was drenched in a sweet peanut sauce. Seafood Dumpling Soup (Steamed): My least favorite of the three items I ordered on my inaugural trip. The Con: The filling fresh, but the flavor just didn't please me sense of taste. The Pro: I hate dumplings with thick wraps and I didn't have that problem here. When it comes to dumplings, the skin is just as important as the filling! Steamed Shau Lon Pau: Mmmm! Always a fave! These aren't the best I've ever had, but they're pretty damn good! The skin was just right, the meat was tasty, and of course, the juices of the soup inside the dumpling was yummy! I was squirting all over the place (need more practice on How to Eat a Soup Dumpling)!

Since I was last at Excellent Dumpling House, they've had at least one makeover. Now this place sports LCD screens out front displaying menus. As for food, we shared a decent plate of vegetarian fried rice ($6.75; cash only) and vegetable dumplings (4.95) which were surprisingly good. Their hot and sour soup wasn't that extraordinary, but hit the spot. Complimentary tea, too. Service was on-point. Our server was the coolest I've ever met in a Chinatown restaurant in recent memory.

I do not get some of the recent negative reviews of this place. I probably would have avoided it had I read them first. Fortunately, I did not before I dining here and I am very happy with this decision. As a visitor from out-of-state, I only discovered this place because I came here with my family. This is one of their favorite places to eat in the city. The pork jaozi (or yaki mandu) was so tasty and no, it was not greasy. The meat was cooked well and yet tender and flavorful. The pork siu mai was perfect! The meat again was juicy and flavorful. The mapo tofu was also very tasty. Too bad we ate so much earlier in the day at another place or we certainly would have ordered more dishes. Hard to give a place five stars based only on the three dishes I tried but this place is known as a dumpling place and the dumplings we ordered were indeed excellent. A great spot for Chinese dumplings and cheap eats.
